In a city still reeling from the riots of January 6, the far-right “# JusticeforJ6” demonstration scheduled for the Capitol this Saturday naturally receives a lot of attention before this weekend. But there are also many other (positive! Fun!) Events in the District. Here is what we recommend.
Discover the incredible new exterior of the Hirshhorn Museum.
From Saturday, the Hirshhorn will be draped in a huge pastel, Draw the curtain, by Swiss artist Nicolas Party. The 829-foot mural will be on display until spring 2022 while the museum undergoes renovations.
Roller skating in an ephemeral ice rink.
DowntownDC on Wheels, a pop-up ice rink, is taking over a block of Penn Quarter this weekend. Rolloway Productions will be on site to offer skating lessons. The free event will feature performances, movie screenings with silent disco headphones, and snacks from Shake Shack. Skates will be provided on a first come, first serve basis (so bring your own if you have some). Registration is compulsory.
Spend the day at the H Street Festival.
Covering 11 blocks of H Street, NE and featuring over 200 local businesses and community organizations, the Saturday H Street Festival is the place to be for tons of entertainment and food. Enjoy handcrafted cocktails and hookah at the Dear Summer Block Party or dine on delicious Jamaican-Mexican cuisine from Jerk At Nite.
Treat yourself to the seemingly endless Oktoberfest beer specials
The Munich Oktoberfest could be canceled this year, but several breweries and breweries in the district are having celebrations this weekend. Head to Ivy City for the neighborhood’s very first Oktoberfest party, featuring bratwurst from Gravitas and beers from Other Half Brewing, Halfway Crooks, Silver Branch and more. In Columbia Heights, the Midlands beer garden is celebrating Oktoberfest for the next two weeks, serving German flights with hot pretzels and kids. Looking for more? Dance your heart to the Kennedy Center National Dance Day celebration
Kennedy Center National Dance Day will be filled with DJ sets, dance performances, and opportunities to learn new moves, from Latin and hiphop to Afrobeat and contemporary. American Dance Movement will even teach you a flash mob routine to Ariana Grande and Zedd’s hit song “Break Free”.
Cheer on the Nationals against the Colorado Rockies
The forecast for this weekend is shaping up to be perfect weather for baseball, and there are still tons of seats left for Saturday’s game against the Rockies. Tickets are as low as $ 13.
