OKC Beautiful will organize a dance party from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on September 9 along Boulevard Classen.
“Dancin ‘in the Street” will feature live music by SquadLive, food trucks, drinks and dancing in the southbound lane of Classen Boulevard from Seventh Street to Ninth Street.
The dance party will be a celebration of the OKC Beautiful 50th Anniversary Project, a two-block work of art by Joe Slack. The artwork, titled “Birdwatching OKC Lightning Thunder Dance Party,” was installed in 2019. Slack and his assistant spent 1,800 hours on the project between sketching, measuring, cutting, installing and painting.
When asked to think about the two-block mural, Slack said, “I’m very proud of the accomplishment. When I look at the play, it just makes me smile, which is the best possible outcome. I hope this will help strengthen the sense of pride and community in the region. You cannot have a thriving, thoughtful, productive and happy community without the contribution of public art. I also hope it will make people smile and make their journeys a little better than before. “
OKC Beautiful invites the public to attend the celebration of public art and community.
“We know that public art and beautiful spaces support the neighborhood’s sense of history and culture and contribute to economic vitality,” said Lisa Synar, executive director of OKC Beautiful. “With the support of Robbie Kienzie, City Arts and Cultural Affairs Liaison. from Oklahoma City, we were able to commission this unique piece of art for the community to enjoy.
