Yavapai College is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 like never before, by hosting a variety of activities that will make it easy for the entire community to immerse themselves in the rich culture and history of our fellow Americans. .
The celebration was conducted under the direction of a diverse group of YC students, faculty and staff dedicated to sharing the vibrancy and warmth of the Hispanic community that touches us all. Students decorate and bring a Hispanic touch to each of YC’s six campuses and centers in Yavapai County with food, movies, art, music, dance, learning Spanish and Moreover.
“Roughrider Ambassadors and other members of the YC community are making this celebration something special. We couldn’t celebrate last year so we’re making up for it this year. We hope it will bring everyone together in the spirit of community, inclusion and belonging that we greatly appreciate at YC, ”said Janice Soutee, Director of Leadership and Student Engagement at YC.
The four-week Hispanic Heritage Month celebration kicks off Wednesday, September 15 with an all-day Mexican food feast at the Prescott Campus Cavaliers’ Dinner, as well as a photo booth for celebratory footage with friends.
Next week, September 22 and 23, the Prescott and Verde campuses, respectively, will host outdoor screenings of the animated feature “Coco”. Pinatas and more entertainment are part of each Movie Night, which both starts at 7 p.m.
The following week, September 30, students in Verde Valley host a game night for Hispanic Heritage Month. Game night is set for 6:00 p.m. in the M-Room 137 building on the Verde Valley campus. On Friday October 1, YC Spanish teacher Dr Curtis Kleinman will give a talk on how to “embrace your inner bilingualism” and dramatically improve your language learning ability. Kleinman’s lecture takes place at noon at B-19, room 147, on the Prescott campus.
YC Library is launching a new monthly Spanish café in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The initial language exchange will take place at the YC and Verde Valley campus libraries on Wednesday October 6 at noon. Coffee and churros will be provided. All are welcome to attend for free every first Wednesday of the month Spanish Café.
Thursday October 7 is a big HHM celebration day on the Verde and Prescott campuses. An evening of salsa dancing, hosted by Latin dance teacher Daniel Garcia, will take place at noon in the courtyard of the Prescott campus. It will be followed that evening by a screening of the film “Tortilla Soup” on the Prescott and Verde Valley campuses.
YC will close Hispanic Heritage Month with a community celebration on Wednesday, October 13, featuring YC President Dr. Lisa Rhine and acclaimed mask artist Zarco Guerrero, sharing his art, process and influence: The late Cesar Chavez.
