CHENNAI: What started as a college addiction quickly turned into a money-making business during the pandemic for 24-year-old G Jeeva. However, his luck ran out on Wednesday night after a two-year run and he was arrested on the basis of a tip-off. Police seized drugs worth Rs 20 lakh from him.
Jeeva from Tondiarpet was arrested by a special police team headed by SI Kadhar Meera and supervised by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Washermenpet, E Sundaravathanan. The drugs seized include MDMA, LSD patches, OG Kush weed, magic mushrooms, 150 ecstasy tablets, 80 LSD patches, 500g of ganja as well as packaging materials.
“Jeeva used an encrypted messaging app to buy drugs in Mumbai, Delhi, Shillong, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. He used WhatsApp to contract buyers and delivered the drugs through the Dunzo delivery app,” E Sundaravathanan said.
Jeeva received the drugs from vendors via India Post. They were hidden inside the books after the pages were dug out, police said. Police said he bought each tablet for Rs 500 and sold it for Rs 1,200. Customers ordered in gm and paid through UPI.
Jeeva, a B Com graduate, worked in an electronics store before the pandemic. While a drug addict in college, he was admitted to a rehab center when he passed out from college. However, he continued to use drugs and during the lockdown after losing his job, Jeeva would share drugs with his friends for a low price.
“Two years after learning how to order drugs on the dark web, Jeeva has expanded her network across Chennai. Some of his customers were surprised at the rave party at ECR last week,” said Kadhar Meera. His customers are mostly IT employees or students, police added.
