DETROIT – Over the years, the City of Detroit has been on the kind of national list that a city doesn’t want to be on, but on Monday night, Time magazine names Detroit one of the best places in the world to visit this year.
The city is on Time Magazine’s “World’s 50 Most Beautiful Places” list, which ranks the top 50 international destinations to explore.
In the United States, the weather recommends the hip west coast hubs of Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, the cool Florida coast of Miami and the “Comeback City” of Detroit, Michigan.
Winter ski destination Park City, Utah also gets a nod.
It’s a great example of the Detroit difference.
A few years ago, the area outside Detroit City Hall had six lanes of traffic. It is now a green space, a park, a destination for lunch and, on many evenings, a dance party.
“Come to Detroit and enjoy a date,” Detroiter Andrea Thompson said. Salsa! Yeahhh!”
We know Detroit people love and appreciate their city, but now Time Magazine has co-signed, anointing Detroit among the Greatest Places in the World for 2022.
“No, it’s not surprising to me,” Thompson said. “Detroit is a wonderful city to live in. It’s a wonderful city to work in and a wonderful city to play in.”
Detroit’s newfound glory (as Time Magazine calls it) notes its progress and what’s to come.
New restaurants like Midnight Temple and Bashan are set to open, along with places to stay like the Cambria Hotel.
“I love the water,” said Detroiter Melinda Maxwell. “And I love to eat. The food is amazing. We try to go to all the different restaurants every week.
“Pontchartrain, the hotel on Griswold Streetthere’s nothing quite like staying there, and at night, when you turn off your lights and the Cobo lights are shining in your room, and you’re overlooking the riverfront, nothing compares to this,” said Earka of Detroit.
“Detroit is a place where everyone wants to be,” said Detroiter Terence Thompson.
“It’s such validation of the things that are worth saying, that Detroit is an amazing place,” said President and CEO of Visit Detroit Claude Molinari.
Molinari says such recognition and overseas investment to attract tourists is paying off.
“When the National Football League chose us – when other major events chose us – they were all differentiators and a positive,” Molinari said. “It is certain that being chosen as one of the top 50 destinations in the world is a testament to how far we have come and how far we will go.”
“You don’t have to be from Detroit to appreciate Detroit,” Earka said.
The city is back on top, and we’re here to celebrate with you,” said Detroiter Jonathan Maxwell.
The company that Detroit keeps on Time Magazine’s list says it all.
