Isaiah House will hold its first edition “SunUp” event at 7 a.m. on Friday, August 13, at Maplewood Memorial Park. Inspired by the popular Daybreaker morning rave party, the event includes an hour of yoga and meditation with Baker Street Yoga, followed by a lively dance led by local disc jockey Jen Jones, originally from Australia who has competed in exclusive shows around the world.
Proceeds will go to Isaiah House, East Orange’s only homeless shelter, and to the âJustice for Moussaâ fund – dedicated to solving the June murder of Moussa Fofana, an 18-year-old from Columbia High School. .
âI’m a huge fan of Daybreaker, and I was struck that we could make a similar benefit to Maplewood,â says Kristen Beveridge, a South Orange resident who sits on the Isaiah House board. âYoga and dancing are activities that people of all ages can enjoy, so families can come together. It’s a perfect event to kick off a summer day.
Isaiah House provides support services to the most vulnerable members of the community, including those devastated by unemployment, disease, drug addiction, teenage pregnancy, fires and crises. During COVID, the shelter provided nearly $ 285,000 in rent assistance to residents of East Orange, and its pantry served nearly 12,000 people from 6,000 households – a 40% increase from 2019.

“Although the need for funds continues to be great due to the devastating impact of COVID, we have not been able to host live events for over 18 months,” said Elizabeth Kubany, co-chair of the event and member of the Isaiah House Board of Directors. “We are thrilled to be producing this fantastic outdoor experience and hope to sell the 250 tickets we have available.”
The SunUp for Isaiah House event takes place from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. EST on Friday, August 13 at 580 Valley Street in Maplewood. Tickets cost $ 60 for adults, $ 30 for teens, and $ 100 for families; the event is limited to 250 participants. Coffee and goodies will be available during the event for purchase through Drip Coffee and other local vendors. Custom Isaiah House t-shirts can also be bought in advance and worn during the event, with proceeds going to Isaiah House. To find out more and purchase tickets, click here.
