In the development which came 12 days after over 700kg of mephedrone worth Rs 1,400 crore was seized from a drug manufacturing unit at Nalasopara in Palghar district, Worli ANC unit officials raided a synthetic drug factory in the city of Ankleshwar in Gujarat and seized 513 kg of mephedrone worth Rs.1,026 crore.

Police also seized 812 kg of white powder and 397 kg of chemicals used to prepare narcotics at the raided factory in Ankleshwar.

The factory which the Mumbai police raided is located in the GIDC compound at Panoli in the city of Ankleshwar.

Police have identified as the arrested person the owner of the drug unit, Giriraj Dixit, who holds a master’s degree in chemistry,

Along with the latest arrest, the total number of arrests made in ongoing investigations into what is believed to be part of an international drug trafficking racket.

Among those arrested, there are six men and one woman. Among them are a couple of skilled chemists who allegedly made the mixtures of various chemicals to make the final drugs.

Of the seven people arrested, five are currently in custody, while the others are in custody.

Acting on a tip-off received from their counterparts in Worli in March this year following the arrest of a drug trafficker from Govandi in northeast Mumbai, ANC officials had on August 3, 2022 raided a drug manufacturing unit located in Nalasopara and recovered Mephedrone worth Rs 1,400 crore. The seized contraband was intended for distribution to drug traffickers in and around Mumbai.

Mephedrone (MD), also known as M-cat, Meow Meow or White Magic, is a synthetic stimulant with psychoactive characteristics of the class of amphetamines and typically used at rave parties. This party drug is a prohibited mind-altering substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).

The latest drug smuggling in Ankleshwar as well as the one carried out on August 3rd is the biggest drug smuggling done by the police in the town in recent times. The massive drug seizures are a consequence of earlier raids in which 3.26kg of mephedrone worth Rs 4.51 crore from three people were arrested in two separate operations on March 29 this year.

Incidentally, the main accused arrested in Nalasopara on August 3 is a graduate in organic chemistry and used his knowledge to manufacture synthetic drugs. The modus operandi used by the main defendant was to manufacture the drugs in the Nalasopara unit and sell them on the open market through his agents and drug traffickers.

The main defendant used to sell the drug in bulk weighing more than a minimum of 20-25 kg of the prohibited substance. “The defendant used social media platforms, calling apps for drug trafficking and supply,” a senior official said.
