Poll shows Nelson ahead of Walters in Oklahoma superintendent race

Pollsters are finding a greater degree of polarization across most races – with Republicans voting only for Republicans and Democrats staying loyal to their party.

However, when it comes to the Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction’s race and education issues, analysts see voters switching parties. Results of an exclusive News 9/News On 6 poll show Democrat Jena Nelson with 48.1% of the vote, Republican Ryan Walters 43.1% and 8.8% undecided. Nelson is Oklahoma’s 2020 Teacher of the Year and Walters is Oklahoma’s current Secretary of Education.

“What we’re seeing is up to 17% of Republicans voting for Nelson over Walters, which indicates that Walters hasn’t quite gained his own party‘s support yet,” the official said. pollster Bill Shapard.

Republicans make up 57% of registered voters in Oklahoma.

So who are the Republicans voting for Democrat Jena Nelson, and why?

“(Walters) is doing well in some Republican strongholds, mostly in Tulsa for example. But he’s not doing well in some rural areas, which are also very Republican, but that may have to do with the issue of school choice. , and where they’re not quite ready to give up funding for their public schools,” Shapard said.

More parents of children voted for Nelson, while older voters voted for Walters.

But the pollsters asked a question they had never asked before: what are the best outcomes for parents, children and teachers?

“Oklahomans identified Democrats and their policies as best for teachers, and they identified Republicans and their policies as best for parents,” Shapard said.

Shapard also examines whether the long-held expectation that Democrats will get more support on education issues is fading.

“I really think Oklahomans are starting to question whether Democrats are still reflecting their values when it comes to education, but we’re not there yet. We can see that in the Walters-Nelson race.”

Oklahoma’s poll of likely voters has a margin of error of 4.89%.
