Tirked Houston! will lead a whirlwind weekend of Israeli folk dance at the J

Dance at the J organizers have plans for Tirkedu Houston! the Israeli Folk Dance Workshop, which will meet Thursday through Sunday, March 3-6, at the J. “Guest instructor Ken Avner is looking forward to the in-person gathering of dancers,” said Shira Moses, co-organizer of the event.

Avner began his involvement in Israeli dance in 1975 at the insistence of his sister and hasn’t stopped since. Today, he is active in all aspects of Israeli dance: teaching, performance, technical and audio production, choreography and collaboration with major Israeli dance workshops and festivals.

In addition to teaching local workshops in Texas, Avner has been on staff at Kochavim Workshop since its founding.

In formal training, Avner holds a Bachelor of Science Ed. in dance from Georgia State University. Avner’s enthusiasm and love for dance combine with his skills as a dancer, teacher, performer and markid to make dance welcoming and fun for all.

This fun weekend of Israeli dance at the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC begins Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. and continues Friday through Sunday, March 4-6.

“Ken is an amazing energetic teacher; his teaching is very clear and precise,” said Dee Jacobson, co-coordinator of Israeli dance at the J.

The weekend includes a Thursday kick-off session, a Friday evening meet-and-greet, teaching sessions for beginners to advanced dancers, a Saturday evening dance party and a Sunday review.
